How to turn Signal voice notes into text, privately

People use Signal because they do not want their conversations on someone else's server. Transcribing a voice note should not undo that.

Updated 2026-10-25

Signal does not transcribe voice messages. That is consistent with how Signal works: it keeps as little as possible, and transcription would mean either processing on your phone or sending audio somewhere. So if you want the words, you need a tool. The tool you pick decides whether your private conversation stays private.

What to avoid

Bots and upload sites. A transcription bot or website receives a copy of the audio. Even with good intentions, that copy now sits on a server you do not control, under terms you did not write. For most Signal users, that defeats the point of using Signal.

Forwarding to yourself on another app. Sending the note into a different messenger to use its transcripts moves the audio into that company's systems.

The private way: transcribe on your own device

InkSaid runs speech recognition on your Mac's own chip, so the audio is turned into text without leaving the computer.

  1. In Signal Desktop, save the voice note. It goes to Downloads.
  2. InkSaid picks it up from Downloads on its own. Dropping it on the window works too.
  3. Read the words a few seconds later. The audio copy is deleted as soon as they appear.

On iPhone, hold the voice note in Signal, tap Share, then InkSaid. On the same wifi as your Mac, the file travels straight to it and the text comes back to the phone. No server sits in the middle. Away from that wifi, InkSaid can send the note through your own iCloud Drive instead. Apple encrypts it end to end only if you have turned on Advanced Data Protection, so if Signal level privacy matters for a note, switch the iCloud route off and send it when you are home.

What "private" should mean

When you check any transcription tool, ask four questions:

  1. Where is the audio processed? On your device, or on a server?
  2. Is anything kept? The audio, the text, or the file name?
  3. Is it used for training? Many services reserve the right.
  4. Can you delete everything? In one step, for real?

InkSaid's answers: on your Mac, nothing kept by default, never used for training, and one button clears every note and transcript.

Good habits for sensitive notes

  • Turn on delete the original from Downloads so saved voice notes do not linger.
  • Leave keeping off unless you need a record. Cards vanish when you close InkSaid.
  • If a note is truly sensitive, use only the private engine. Every card shows which route it took.
