ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok for voice notes: where your audio goes

Sharing a voice note to ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok works, and the transcript is often good. What you give up is where the audio goes and what happens to the words afterwards.

On an iPhone, hold a WhatsApp voice note, tap Share, and you will often see ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok in the list. Pick one and you get a transcript in seconds, usually a good one. For a single casual note, that is a fine answer.

It is worth knowing what that tap does, though, before you make it a habit with notes from clients, suppliers or family.

Where the audio goes

Each of these apps sends the voice note to its maker's servers, where a model turns it into text. The note then sits in your chat history with that app, alongside whatever else you have asked it.

What happens next depends on each provider's own settings and policies: whether the chat is kept, for how long, and whether it can be used to improve their models. Those settings differ between apps and change over time, so check them in each app before you share anything sensitive.

The person who sent you the voice note never agreed to any of this. That matters more than it seems when the note is about money, health, children or a deal.

Where they stop

The transcript is the end of the road. The words land in a chat thread with an AI, mixed in with recipes and code questions. Next month, when you need to know what your supplier said about the delivery date, you have to remember which app you used, scroll back, and hope you shared that note at all.

They also need a tap every time: Share, pick the app, wait, then scroll past the commentary to reach the words.

What InkSaid does instead

InkSaid transcribes the note on your own Mac, so the audio never reaches anyone's server, ours included. Then it keeps going:

  • It remembers. On Pro, every note is kept on your Mac, filed by person and chat, and searchable.
  • It works without a tap. Save a note, AirDrop it or share it once, and InkSaid picks it up on its own.
  • It acts on it. A daily digest of what you were told, the promises and dates pulled out, and reply drafts. These are rolling out to founding members first.
